Storia di Collesalvetti
Collesalvetti and its surroundings have Etruscan Roman origins. The original name of Collesalvetti seems to have been “Colle” from the Roman times. The addition of “Salvetti” comes from the 12th century, from the name of the owner of the land. In 1200 it was transformed into a stronghold, fortified and subjected to the dynasty of Pisa, until it passed into the control of Florence, when the Medici started to reclaim the land and to develop it. Colle was transformed into a farmhouse and was the centre of the farm during the eras of the Grand duchy, the Medici and Lorense.

The village then grew up around the farm until it became an autonomous community relatively late, that is in 1808, under French rule. Collesalvetti is situated in fascinating landscape in the heart of Tuscany, between the Livorno hills and the hills of Pisa in an environment rich in interest and natural assets ( such as the park of the Livorno hills ) and history and archaeology, ideal for unforgettable excursions.
collesalvettiThe territory of Collesalvetti includes among various places, Castell’ Anselmo, a hamlet in the Livorno hills which first appears in the 10th century. In 1432 this place was completely destroyed by the Florentine army, but today it is a flourishing small town. In Torretta Vecchia, on the trunk road SS. 206 ( ancient consular road Emilia Scauri) a large spa system and the remains of a Roman building from the 1st century AD have been brought to light.. Colognole, a hamlet which takes its name from being a small Roman colony, is today known for the aqueduct from the Leopoldo era which, with its length of 18 km, reaches the city of Livorno which from 1816 to 1912 used it as their principle water supply. Among the important monuments on the border between Livorno and Collesalvetti, the remains of Romito of Sambuca are particularly important, declared a national monument in 1910, an ancient place of worship, which first appeared in 1238, founded by the Augustines and was then entrusted to the Jesuits who then abandoned it.
